Unless you know some things about electronics (which I admittedly don't), I wouldn't recommend trying to throw together a new ballast. Like the above poster, I recommend investing in some T-5s and starting out with soft corals, such as mushroom corals. You would need to get a new ballast. I'm no expert in electronics, but I do know that ballasts can only support a certain amount of wattage.
