Otocinclus – The Hard Working Little Algae Eater
Algae Control and Feeding Otocinclus The primary purpose Otocinclus tend to serve in the freshwater aquarium is cleaning or acting as an algae eating fish. As with all cleaners or algae eaters, however, Otocinclus cannot be expected to clean everything, nor can they be expected to completely remove aquarium algae. In order to be effective algae eaters in the freshwater aquarium, a fair number of Otocinclus may be required for algae control. Origins of Otocinclus and General Facts The striped Otocinclus, or Otocinclus Vittatus, is probably the most common variety of Otocinclus available in the hobby. Caring for Otocinclus Catfish While capable of living in a small aquarium, Otocinclus prefer larger, planted aquariums with peaceful, community fish. Otocinclus are cute, hard working algae eaters that perfect for planted aquariums. For reasons including security, food source, and for the sake of potential spawning, Otocinclus should be kept in a planted aquarium as the algae eating fish will be more at home and less likely to suffer from stress. Though they are algae eaters, Otocinclus are not exclusively herbivorous. It can be difficult choosing the right algae eater or cleanup crew for a freshwater aquarium. Keeping algae eaters does not mean the aquarist is absolved from cleaning and maintenance duties. Otocinclus are small, active, and voracious for algae, making them excellent choices for community or planted aquariums. Being a somewhat sensitive algae eating fish, be sure to maintain high water quality and keep ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates to a minimum. They are especially adept at cleaning algae from plant leaves. This algae eating fish originates in South America, specifically Peru, Bolivia, and Brazil. As omnivores, they prefer a mixed diet which can include algae and sinking wafers, shrimp, blood worms, zucchini, peas, green beans, and fish. As long as the aquarist is willing to keep the water clean and provide the necessities, Otocinclus can thrive and bring plenty of personality to the freshwater aquarium. Plants should be provided for Otocinclus to emulate a natural environment and provide a basic food source and security.
