I like these filters better than the kind where you add your own charcoal because the charcoal won’t simply fall to the bottom of the filter on these Aqueon filter cartridges. The Aqueon filter is a low end, basic aquarium filter. Having this type of filter is better than having a high end filter that you never change because it takes too much work. You MUST rinse this filter thoroughly prior to using it. I would suggest rinsing under running water first then wagging it in a bowl of water, then returning under the faucet for a final rinse. It’s also faster to replace a filter like this and you won’t spill charcoal all over the place trying to fill it. I’ve read that some doctors believe charcoal is very bad for you and you should be careful not to breath any into your lungs. I think that gives you more total surface area for your filter.
